San José is a province located in the Central Valley and San José city is the capital of Costa Rica.
Actually the Juan Santamaria airport is located in Alajuela which is another province of Costa Rica, but the international airport is named internationally with the capital name, that´s the reason why the Juan Santamaría international Aiport is also know as the San Jose Airport.

Things to do In San José
If you want to stay one more day in San José and enjoy one day tour before to depart to Tortuguero , that is possible too.
San José is not the fanciest city, but is very convenient if you want to save money as it is plenty of B&B´s and hotels from basic to fancy.
Besides that, you get a one day tour from San José and visit the Irazú Volcano or the Poas Volcano ( there are some considerations to take before to decide to visit the Poas Volcano)
A very nice one day activity we recommend to do is go to the Poas Volcano early morning, then go to Doka Estate and enjoy the coffee tour and finally you can to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, this is very nice is you travel with children.
Another option is to go to Irazu Volcano, you can also visit the Lankester Garden which it is specialized in Orchids research.
There are some other travelers that want to picked up at San Jose and depart to Tortuguero.
You can also go first Arenal Volcano or Puerto Viejo and then take your trip to Tortuguero
Many travelers that want to get their car rental in San José, leave it at La Pavona for 2 or 3 days. We can coordinate with the Tortuguero staff to pick you up from La Pavona.
